You in ReverseBuilt to Spill Warner, 2006 Numerical Feelings: 8.9 Martsch and Co are very enthusiastic about their new album's vintage flavor; in short they forgo pristine technical perfection for a rough-hewn and free-wheeling sense of exploration -- all in effort to hark back to the primal, self-mystified, religious guitar-fervor of early early metal-sapien, when rock first dreamed of sculpting stainless-steel cathedrals out of raw and pregnant sound-stuff -- and if you don't think that same dream is what Perfect from Now On was all ABOUT -- then fuck you and just admit that Ancient Melodies is secretly your favorite album and otherwise get your stupid ears off my band. In conclusion: the zeitgeist, the aspiration and direction of You in Reverse is unimpeachable. Built to Spill tracked down their estranged muse and MARRIED it. The execution is certainly flawed -- and it's incredible how much one lame song, two ok songs, and one potentially god-like song, but undercooked (5, 7&9, and 8, those tracks), can hurt an otherwise brilliant, I mean just fucking incredibly brilliant set of masterpieces -- but I expect time will dull the bite of this album's shortcomings, and let its vast virtues burrow deep into the affections of all us sensible, right-minded listeners. It will mean so very, very much to us. "Ancient Melodies of the Future". BtS said everything they are in those five words, and now, they sound like it again, and more than ever. -5.07.2006
You in Reverse is the first proper album in five years from Built to Spill. Built to Spill rocked through the 90s indie style under the guidance of singer Doug Martsch; he says thank you when you see their live show. Their music has on numerous occassions seared the fabric of reality and caused God to manifest in liquid sound.
